State & National Parks

The Villages of Hallelujah Acres is surrounded by ‘healthy lifestyle’ venues. Within a quick 45 minute drive, you’ll discover five beautiful state parks, two national parks, and the largest wildlife reserve in the Southeast. There’s no excuse not to explore! Whether you are hiking, biking, rock climbing, fishing, boating, horseback riding, camping, or simply bird watching…there is nature nearby.

Kings Mountain State Park
Residents of The Villages will enjoy a beautiful view of Kings Mountain’s state and national park. A big, hilly, woodsy park with lots to do, this has been a regional favorite for generations. Built originally by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, Kings Mountain has miles of trails, equestrian facilities, group camping barracks, campgrounds, two fishing lakes with boat rentals and the popular Living History Farm. The farm is a realistic replica of a typical Piedmont farm from the early to mid 1800s.

South Mountain State Park
The South Mountains are an isolated, majestic and rugged mountain range, arising from the gently rolling Foothills and upper Piedmont region of western North Carolina. You'll find a belt of peaks and knobs, with deep valleys in between. These mountains encompass 100,000 acres in Burke, Cleveland and Rutherford counties.

Chimney Rock State Park
North Carolina's newest state park is located on theedge of the Hickory Nut Gorge, around the monolithic rock formation which gives the area its name. Carved out of the side of the Blue Ridge, the Hickory Nut Gorge is an area of special geology and ecology and the park preserves some of the best of what this area has to offer. The park's namesake, a huge pillar of granite provides views that are second to none. You'll see the Gorge, the surrounding mountains, and sparkling Lake Lure. Competing with the majesty of Chimney Rock is the regions tallest waterfall. The spectacular 404 foot Hickory Nut Falls - is accessible at both the top and the bottom trails.

Gorges State Park
A complement of Chimney Rock State Park, the Gorges State Park is a unique collection of waterfalls, rugged river gorges, sheer rock cliffs and one of the greatest concentrations of rare and unique species in the eastern United States. It's located on the Blue Ride Escarpment - in an area where elevations rises 2,000 feet in only four miles. Here, moisture is squeezed out of Southerly flowing air to create rainfall in excess of 80 inches per year. This qualifies the unique environment as a temperate rain forest.

Crowder’s Mountain State Park
This beautiful park offers a wealth of activities for all ages: rock climbing, back country camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking, canoeing, bird watching, educational programs, and more! Hikes range from mild to difficult but offer a view of the City of Charlotte to the east and North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains to the west.

Cowpens National Battlefield
For an easy walk and history to boot, Cowpens, SC is the perfect spot. Cowpens Battlefield Park has several activities available for visitors. Walking on the battlefield trail, having a picnic, cycling the trails and viewing exhibits in the Visitor Center are just a few. The historic reenactments have long captured school groups and history buffs as well.

Kings Mountain National Military Park
Kings Mountain National Military Park commemorates a pivotal and significant victory by American Patriots over American Loyalists during the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War. The battle fought on October 7, 1780 destroyed the left wing of Cornwallis' army and effectively ended Loyalist ascendance in the Carolinas. The victory halted the British advance into North Carolina, forced Lord Cornwallis to retreat from Charlotte into South Carolina, and gave General Nathanael Greene the opportunity to reorganize the American Army.

Kings Mountain Gateway Trails
The Gateway trails will begin in the heart of Kings Mountain only 10 minutes from The Villages. Known as the Carolina Thread Trail, it will weave together communities and connect North and South Carolina, knitting together existing and planned local greenways in the 15-county region through a 500-mile ribbon of green. It will link parks, trails, paths, abandoned railroads, scenic roadways, rural green space and historic sites to more than 40 destinations and attractions across the region.
